Studies
Pittsburgh Early Autism Study
We are studying infants who have an older sibling diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to look for infant behaviors that may predict a later ASD diagnosis. Family home videos of children later diagnosed with ASD suggest that diagnostic signs of ASD may emerge within the first year of life. “Maternal Vascular Adaptations Clinical Research Study”
Researchers in the Departments of Epidemiology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Pittsburgh are conducting a research study to examine how blood vessels change during pregnancy. This information may help scientists understand why some pregnant women have complications like preterm birth and preeclampsia. As a participant in the Maternal Vascular Adaptations to Healthy Pregnancy (MVP) Study, you will receive a noninvasive ultrasound scan to measure the health of your carotid arteries. You also would be asked to complete paper-and-pencil questionnaires, a blood test to measure your cholesterol, glucose, and insulin levels, and blood pressure measurements. If you participate your confidentiality will be strictly maintained, and your name would never appear on research materials.
You may be eligible for this study if:
You are pregnant for the first time
You are between 14 and 40 years of age
You have never smoked
You are in good general physical and mental health
The MVP Study would require up to four study visits; up to three during your pregnancy and one six weeks after the birth of your baby. Each visit would last approximately 60-90 minutes. Participationis entirely voluntary. Participants will be compensated. To learn more and see if you eligible to participate in this study please contact: Nancy Niemczyk, CNM, MSN University of PittsburghDepartment of Epidemiology at[email protected] or call 412-624-3350
INTERESTED IN YOUR BABY’S DEVELOPMENT?
The Infant Communication Lab at the University of Pittsburgh is looking for families to participate in a study of motor development in infants. A total of 5 observations will take place when your baby is 12, 14, 18, 24, and 36 months old. Observations will occur in your home at a time convenient for you. During the home visits, we will videotape your baby as s/he plays with a member of our research team, placing toys into containers and building block towers. To participate, your infant must be younger than 12 months and have an older brother or sister. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please contact us at the phone numbers below, or visit our website: http://www.pitt.edu/~icl
